Thankful for the Many Opportunities to Lead Together

Thankful for the Many Opportunities to Lead Together

November 28, 2025

November 28, 2025

Dear Gonzaga Community,

Happy Thanksgiving

I want to wish all of our Gonzaga community a healthy and happy Thanksgiving holiday. Whether you’re traveling or staying in Spokane, please be safe during your journey and your time with your loved ones. I hope you enjoy the break and take the opportunity to reflect on the many things you are grateful for.

I am particularly grateful for our community, one that steps up together at times of challenge, and gathers around to support each other when things get difficult for any one of us. And this community extends beyond our campus. There isn’t a single day that goes by that I do not hear from friends of Gonzaga, alumni, and neighbors about the impact the University makes, and how our students are involved in service and many other important initiatives across town. We just celebrated the 30th anniversary of the Center of Community Engagement, a faithful witness of the many ways we lead together inside and outside our University.

I was happy to join Editor Erica Bullock to discuss women in leadership for the Journal of Business's "Elevating the Conversation" podcast.

I was happy to join Editor Erica Bullock to discuss women in leadership for the Journal of Business's "Elevating the Conversation" podcast.

I always welcome the chance to reflect on what makes a great leader, and I’m so thankful that at Gonzaga we focus, as our Mission states, on educating students for lives of leadership and service to the common good.

When I sat down with the Spokane Journal of Business to record an episode of their podcast “Elevating the Conversation” on the subject of “Women in Leadership,” I had a great chat with Erica Bullock. The night before we talked, Erica learned she’d been promoted to become editor of the Journal, and our conversation was her first time hosting the paper’s podcast.

We talked about the importance of mentorship, the increasing impact of women in higher education, ongoing inequalities, and the many ways Gonzaga educates leaders – through scholarly pursuits, experiential learning opportunities, and having an entire school at the University dedicated to Leadership Studies.

It was an honor to join the Women Lead Fall Luncheon and meet so many members of the Spokane community working to support each other.

It was an honor to join the Women Lead Fall Luncheon and meet so many members of the Spokane community working to support each other.

I was warmly welcomed by the School of Leadership Studies’ Women Lead Fall Luncheon. This luncheon was the 10th held by the Women Lead program, and brought together 260 working professionals and students from the Spokane community to meet, network and address the universal themes and challenges faced by everyone from CEOs and C-Suite executives to mid-career professionals and those just starting out in their careers.

I felt so fortunate to meet and talk with such an impressive group, and share a little bit of my journey. I reflected on how fast and far we have travelled since the mid-1800s, when women began to be admitted to college and awarded degrees that enabled them to dedicate themselves to a life of service, first in healthcare and education, and then across almost any major. A UNESCO report shows that today, 52% of students graduating from higher education institutions worldwide are women, leading to more professional opportunities across many sectors.

It was wonderful to spend time with the owners of the GU “pensioni” who strive to provide a warm, home-like environment for our students studying in Florence.

It was wonderful to spend time with the owners of the GU “pensioni” who strive to provide a warm, home-like environment for our students studying in Florence.

I was thrilled to make my first visit as president to our Gonzaga in Florence (GIF) campus and meet students, faculty, staff, and even the owners of the very famous “pensioni” where our students live in a true family-style experience. In such an incredible setting, overlooking a park where Michelangelo found inspiration, I reflected on how many GIF alumni I have met so far. So many Zags have enjoyed transformative experiences in Florence as part of their education, and the Mozilo Center is a true treasure. I’m so grateful to the forward-thinking Zags who established Gonzaga in Florence more than 60 years ago, and all those who support its ongoing work. I very much look forward to visiting again and to thinking about how we can continue to increase our presence in the beautiful city on the Arno River.

While in Italy, I also joined an incredible group from the International Federation of Catholic Universities for meetings that included a discussion with the IFCU’s Women Leadership Program to reflect on what it takes to move Catholic higher education forward. It’s so heartening to find mission-centered collaborators from around the world striving, like we are at Gonzaga, to prepare for a future filled with purpose. Our IFCU group even got a short but meaningful welcome from Pope Leo XIV! It was an incredible blessing.

I’m so thankful to be part of this incredible University and for the many opportunities that it has afforded me to lead forward with you by opening new doors, empowering potential and leading with hope. From my family and I to you and yours: Happy Thanksgiving. And Go Zags!
